читать дальше- Calling oneself ‘trash’ or ‘garbage’ can be a problem, because it can be a real symptom of depression and low self-worth and self-esteem. But OP’s personal experiences are not universal. Please do not tell me, or anyone else, that the way we use the word is a symptom of our underlying self-esteem problems simply because “[You] know it is.”
I can’t speak for the whole of the hydra trash party. But I know that the dozen or so htp friends I regularly chat with on IRC, the entire point of using the word “trash” is owning the fact that there is nothing wrong with enjoying “trashy” fiction. Is gleefully, unapologetically admitting that we enjoy fiction about unsafe kinks and unhealthy situations that would be 100% wrong in real life.
We’re not using “trash” as an insult for ourselves, our works, or anyone else. We’re taking ownership of it as a simple classification for things that we enjoy, and that anyone should be allowed to enjoy without shame.
- I do wish, though, that people would stop calling themselves trash for generic fannish stuff. This is for purely selfish reasons: it makes it matter less when I say my stuff is garbage. Because when it comes to HYDRA trash, I think it’s not just okay but important that we call it trash.
Rape is bad. Abuse of power (and that’s what most dub-con is, really, isn’t it?) is bad. That doesn’t make you a bad person for reading about it, or writing about it, or getting hot thinking about it (or enjoying it in a way that doesn’t involve pantsfeelings, or not enjoying it at all). It doesn’t mean you can’t write it in a way that makes it sexy. (Do you know nothing of my work?)
But you should write it in a way that makes it clear that you, the writer, recognize it for what it is. Even if none of the characters do. And the more people go around calling things “trash” that aren’t, you know, incredibly awful stories full of consent issues and psychological abuse, the more useless saying “this is trash” becomes as a label to indicate that you recognize it.
